"BIRKENSTOCK Opens Umah Ubud, Its First Store in Indonesia"
BIRKENSTOCK has spent more than 250 years being known for one thing, a footbed, so it is telling that its biggest move in Indonesia is not really about shoes at all. The German brand has opened its first standalone store in the country, and it has chosen to make it a cultural and experiential flagship rather than a shop. It is called BIRKENSTOCK Umah Ubud, and it sits in one of Bali's most creative corners.
For anyone in the region who plans a trip around good design as much as good coffee, this is worth a note in the itinerary. "Umah" means "home" in Balinese, and the store leans hard into that idea, built as a place to linger rather than a place to grab a pair of Arizonas and leave.
Designed in Bali, for Bali
The store runs to about 615 square metres and was designed by Yoka Sara, a Balinese artist and architect, who worked to reflect the brand while embracing the art and culture of Ubud. The building uses local materials throughout, including lava stone and hand-woven rattan made by local artisans, and it carries distinctly Balinese elements such as a traditional Kori Kuwadi gate and the black-and-white saput poleng motif.

Spread across two distinct areas, an intimate indoor space and an open rooftop, the store is the first dedicated BIRKENSTOCK community space in Indonesia. That is not marketing filler. Across the year it is meant to host curated programming: creative workshops, hands-on art, craft and DIY sessions, talks on mindfulness and wellness, and seasonal cultural activations aimed at locals, travellers and Ubud's creative community alike.
What is actually on the shelves
The range is one of the most complete BIRKENSTOCK has put in one place in Indonesia. The icons are all here, Arizona, Gizeh, Madrid, Boston and Ramses, in leather and Birko-Flor, with lighter EVA versions and the chunkier Big Buckle as the premium pick. Newer silhouettes get a look in too, including the Shinjuku, Tokio, Florida Platform, Mogami and Birki Flow, alongside premium materials like oiled leather, nubuck and suede.

There is a Kids line for families, plus footwear care products and accessories to keep everything going. The bigger draw for collectors is that Umah Ubud is the first and only place in Indonesia to stock BIRKENSTOCK 1774, the brand's premium line known for finer materials and designer collaborations, along with store-exclusive limited editions you will not find elsewhere in the country.
Why a shoe brand is building a clubhouse
The move fits a wider pattern we keep seeing, where a store earns its rent by being an experience rather than a transaction. It is the same logic behind Tanoti turning craft heritage into a retail destination, and it sits alongside the way performance brands now sell a lifestyle as much as a product, something we got into with our review of the adidas Ultraboost 5.
For BIRKENSTOCK, Umah Ubud is a bet that the best way to grow in a new market is to give people a reason to come and stay a while. If you are heading to Bali, it is a genuinely nice place to spend an hour, whether or not you leave with a new pair.
