Anantara Siam Bangkok Gets a USD 50 Million Makeover

Bangkok is one of the easiest weekends away for Malaysian travellers, and one of the city's best known luxury addresses has just given visitors a fresh reason to book it. Anantara Siam Bangkok, the Ratchadamri hotel that has anchored the capital's luxury scene for more than four decades, has completed a USD 50 million transformation covering every guestroom, its gardens and most of its public spaces.

What has changed

The hotel opened in 1983, designed by the architect George Wimberley, and the refresh has reworked all 335 guestrooms, suites and villas, from the entry-level Deluxe Rooms up to the Presidential Suite. The new interiors lean on teak wood, handcrafted detailing and silk accents, with every bathroom redone in marble with new vanities, lighting and fittings. The look is contemporary but keeps the Thai character the hotel is known for.

Two additions stand out. The new Anantara Garden Pool Suites and Villas sit within the hotel's tropical gardens and come with private pools and separate indoor and outdoor living areas, a rare setup in central Bangkok. There is also a Jim Thompson Explorer Suite, a two-bedroom suite created with the Thai silk house of the same name, with polished teak floors, panelled walls, a private library and curated artwork.

The heritage that stayed

Not everything was rebuilt. The 100-metre hand-painted mural that runs across the lobby, the work of the late Thai muralist Paiboon Suwannakudt, has been preserved, along with the 19 ceiling panels above it that depict the "Heavens in Thai Thought." For most guests this artwork is the first thing they see on arrival, and it was restored rather than replaced.

Dining, events and wellness

The hotel keeps its nine restaurants and bars, a line-up that already drew people who were not staying the night. They include Thai cooking at Spice Market, Italian at Biscotti, Japanese at Shintaro, steaks at Madison Steak Avenue, South American plates at Guilty Bangkok, and Aqua Bar, which made Asia's 50 Best Bars list. All-day options run from Mocha & Muffins to afternoon tea at The Lobby and poolside bites at The Garden Terrace.

The Grand Ballroom and meeting rooms have been redesigned for conferences and weddings, the Anantara Spa has been reworked around its Thai treatments, and a new Siam Sports Club adds a Technogym fitness centre, a Pilates studio and an outdoor zone with a Muay Thai ring, a rock-climbing wall and a functional training area.

Worth a look on the next Bangkok trip

The hotel sits in the Ratchadamri and Pathum Wan area, within reach of the city's main shopping and business districts, which is part of why it has long suited both leisure and work trips. For a sense of how Bangkok's older luxury properties are positioning themselves, it sits alongside places like the rebuilt Dusit Thani Bangkok in leaning hard into Thai design and heritage rather than away from it.

Anantara is a Minor Hotels brand with more than 50 hotels and resorts, and it has been busy across the region, including a recent riverfront makeover at its Hoi An resort in Vietnam. For Malaysian travellers who already treat Bangkok as a regular getaway, the reworked Anantara Siam is one more reason to spend a night in the city rather than just passing through.
